Challenge of Governance and the Quests for Legitimacy and Development in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic
Abstract
The quests for legitimacy and development in Nigeria’s democratic journey since 1999 have been punctuated by rough governance system, paddled by ethnocentric leadership and ethno-nationalism. The trajectories of governance instrumentality that combines interrelated and interacting artifacts designed to work as an incoherent entity has conditioned and interjected Nigeria’s development. Thus, this paper assesses the challenges of governance, legitimacy and development in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic. The study is anchored on Personal Rule paradigm and uses secondary source of data for analysis. It confirms that undemocratic and unethical practices – prebendal politics and centrifugalism have sparked governance crisis and its attendance consequences of legitimacy and development questions in Nigeria’s democratic experience since return to civil rule in 1999. The paper, therefore, recommends among others that government and democratic institutions be strengthened with attitudinal change and character reformation for nation-building.
